We’re nerding out on this installment of our dirt road dispatch. Be sure to keep those seat belts fastened and a firm grip on your “oh shit” handles, as we dive into the world of induction.
If you’re like me, you grew up with electric or gas burning stoves. They do a great job, but instead we chose induction heating for our Lectric Boil. Why, you ask? Well, it’s in part because induction cooking is about twice as efficient with energy usage compared to gas & electric, not to mention safer to use.
Efficiency is a big part of why we chose induction for our Lectric Boil, which gives you a portable, sustainable way to cook, boil water and recharge electrical devices off-grid since it doubles as a generator. Induction heat is also safer, since the surface cools much faster than gas or electric burners.
This is because induction coils trigger a reaction within magnetic metal, which translates to being 80% more efficient than traditional gas at heating, because there's less energy loss during heat transfer. Since the pan itself is producing heat resulting from the induction reaction, once your hot pan is removed, the surface cools rapidly leaving less chance of someone touching a hot surface.
That’s why induction is perfect for the Lectric Boil, it leaves less risk of your little one being burned from a hot surface, or starting an unintended fire in the backcountry. Not to mention you can store it away faster since it needs far less time to cool.
There are a few companies offering induction-friendly cookware made right here in the USA, like Lectric Boil. Our current favorite is Heritage Steel.
