Have you ever used those little portable propane canisters to cook while camping, overlanding or tailgating? And if so, have you ever recycled them once they’re out? Chances are, probably not.
Just in CA alone, up to 7 million are sold each year and most wind up in a landfill. For the few that do get recycled, it can cost up to $65 per unit for local authorities to get rid of them properly.
We spoke to a top official at the Department of Natural Resources and Environment (DNR) about the issue at Michigan campgrounds and they said it's one of the top issues they're trying to address.
Changes are starting in CA though. As of September 2024, Gov. Gavin Newsom signed Senate Bill 1280, which means starting in 2028, those little single-use propane cylinders will need to be reusable.
Great news - you don’t have to wait until 2028 for a reusable, portable cooking solution while outdoors. The future of outdoor flameless cooking is already here, with Lectric Boil.
